Cheers and jeers
Jeer – Staff at the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium in California said a two-spotted octopus, a tiny female known for being curious with visitors, caused a flood in the aquarium Tuesday. The octopus apparently tugged on a valve that allowed hundreds of gallons of water to overflow its tank. This is the second incident in the past two weeks where zoo animals have caused havoc among civil society. Last week, a chimpanzee attacked a woman, nearly costing the victim her life. Is it an animal uprising?
Cheer – After eight nominations, Kate Winslet finally won an Academy Award for best actress in ‘Revolutionary Road’. Good for her, truly. But it seems that it is a few years late. After all, the only reason anyone knows Winslet is because she let Leonardo DiCaprio (and the world) see her in nothing but a necklace in Titanic. But now she can say she’s got an Oscar and that cements her place in Hollywood.
Cheer – Comedian Lewis Black will perform in Goldstein Auditorium on March 25, University Union announced Friday. Black, known for his stand-up comedy and as the host of the Comedy Central program ‘The Root of All Evil,’ will come to Syracuse University as part of his current ‘Let Them Eat Cake’ college tour. Cheer for UU to bring someone relevant and popular to campus. Black has been on several specials and is popular among the college crowd. Sure, he’s no Ludacris who is playing Cornell University Saturday, but his performance will most likely be sold out.
Cheer – Students, faculty and staff now have a chance to share their opinions about Syracuse University Chancellor Nancy Cantor. The university is collecting feedback of Cantor, who is in her fifth year as chancellor, through an online survey sent out last week. The survey, which takes about 20 minutes to complete, is available through March 9. This is a good opportunity for students to truthfully evaluate the chancellor while also being eco-friendly, a recent on-campus initiative. Saving trees and being honest – nothing could be better.
