Syracuse splits doubleheader at Buffalo
The Syracuse softball team played in the state of New York for the first time all season and split a doubleheader at Buffalo Tuesday afternoon. The Orange lost, 5-3, in the first game and won, 6-2, in the second in eight innings. Freshman Kelly Saco finished the day 3-for-4 to lead SU.
In game one, Syracuse jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead on an RBI groundout by Hallie Gibbs. The Orange led, 3-0, after three innings on a home run by Saco and an RBI single by Gibbs.
It all went south from there. Buffalo scored four runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Syracuse recorded two outs at home before the floodgates opened. Dana Carter had the big hit, driving in two runs. Syracuse’s offense was silent from there, thanks to strong defense and solid relief pitching by the Bulls. Terese Diaz threw 4.1 scoreless innings to earn the win.
Game two went much better for the Orange. It again scored in the first inning, this time on an RBI groundout by Nicole Miller. In the sixth inning, Buffalo finally broke through and scored twice to take the lead. But in the seventh, Kelling singled in the game-tying run, sending the game into extra innings.
Syracuse exploded from there, scoring four runs in the eighth, highlighted by a two-run double by Jordan Rosen.
