Syracuse tennis’ season ends after 1-2 stretch in Big East tournament
The Syracuse tennis team ended its historic season this weekend at the Big East tournament, finishing 1-2 in Tampa, Fla. The seventh-seeded Orange defeated 10th-seeded West Virginia, 4-0, on Thursday, before falling to two-seed DePaul, 4-0, on Friday. Fourth-seeded Marquette ended the Orange’s season, 4-2, on Saturday.
SU (16-7) won the doubles point against WVU with Emily Harman and Christina Tan winning at the No. 1 spot and Alessondra Parra and Simone Kalhorn winning at the No. 3 spot, 9-7. In the singles competition, Tan, Kalhorn and Ashley Spicer swept their singles matches to end the match prematurely at 4-0. In a rare occurrence, DePaul won the doubles point against SU. Harman and Tan fell at the No. 1 spot, 8-1, and Kalhorn and Parra lost 8-2 at the No. 3 spot. In the singles slate, Harman lost in the No. 1 spot by the score of 6-1 twice. Tan fell 6-3, 6-0, and Chelsea Jones lost 6-0 and 6-1. Marquette won the doubles point from Syracuse by winning two of the three contests. Harman and Tan, along with Parra and Kalhorn, lost again. In singles action, Harman fell at the No. 1 spot, but Tan and Kalhorn emerged victorious at the No. 2 and No. 3 singles slots to tie the contest at 2-2. The Golden Eagles, though, sealed the deal by winning in the No. 4 and No .5 spots. Syracuse finished 10-4 in Big East play. Syracuse’s 16-7 record is the best winning percentage for the Orange since 2000.
Women’s lacrosse
The Syracuse women’s lacrosse team finished the Big East portion of its regular-season schedule by beating Rutgers, 15-6, Saturday in Piscataway, N.J. The win ensured the Orange (12-3, 6-1 Big East) a share of the regular-season conference title with Georgetown. Since the Hoyas beat SU this season, Syracuse will have the No. 2 seed in the Big East tournament.
Junior Christina Dove led the way with five goals, and Kate Rowan dished out five assists. The game moved Rowan into third on the all-time Division I assists list, passing Johns Hopkins’ Mary Kay (151). Rowan’s seven points also moved her into seventh all-time with 368.
Syracuse will play in the Big East tournament starting Friday in Washington. The Orange will take on No. 3 seed Notre Dame.
Track and Field
Day two of the Princeton Larry Ellis Invitational was a strong one for the Syracuse track and field team. Orange sprinters and hurdlers combined to register nine top-three performances – three of which came in at NCAA regional qualifying times.
On the women’s side, junior Uhunoma Osazuwa took first in the women’s 100-meter hurdles, clocking in at 13.85 seconds and beating the next closest competitor by 0.4 seconds.
For the men, Jarret Eaton and Terry Marshall hit NCAA regional-qualifying times in the men’s 110-meter hurdles. Eaton took second with a time of 13.99, and Marshall snuck in at third at 14.29.
The first outdoor relay race of the season was also a success on the men’s side after Michael LeBlanc, Antoine Clark, Sham Lewis and Eaton dominated the 4×100-meter relay with an IC4A-eligible time of 40.99
