Driscoll gives endorsement to Miner

Syracuse Mayor Matt Driscoll officially endorsed Democratic nominee Stephanie Miner in the Syracuse mayoral race Wednesday.
‘I believe only one candidate has the municipal experience, proven ability, intelligence and articulated plan to accomplish these goals on behalf of all the residents of our community – and that is Stephanie Miner,’ Driscoll said in a news release. Both Miner and Driscoll are Democrats.
Miner will face Steve Kimatian, the Independent and Republican parties’ nominee, and Otis Jennings, the Conservative Party candidate, in the Nov. 3 general election.
Miner, a common councilor, has the Working Families Party nomination. If she wins, she will be the first female mayor of Syracuse.
Driscoll praised Miner’s support of two issues: government accountability and innovation.
But Miner and Driscoll have not always seen eye-to-eye. Miner led the Common Council’s opposition of the Destiny USA expansion to the Carousel Center mall, which was the centerpiece of Driscoll’s economic development plan.
But with a victory within grasp and the possibility of keeping a Democrat in the mayor’s office, the two have put aside their differences for now.
‘We share a commitment to Democratic values – equality, opportunity and justice,’ Miner said of Driscoll in a news release Wednesday. ‘And we share a commitment to looking forward and fostering innovation that will make Syracuse the best 21st century city it can be.’
