STAFF: With 7th consecutive loss, men’s soccer drops to 1-8
Volleyball
Syracuse opened Big East play with a win in Morgantown against West Virginia on Saturday. Syracuse (11-5, 1-1) rolled by the Mountaineers (11-6, 1-1) 3-0, winning consecutive sets of 25-19, 25-14 and 25-20.
Senior middle blocker Sarah Morton led the way for SU, providing a match-high 11 kills. Senior Shanetha McLaurin and senior outside hitter Kacie MacTavish added 11 and 10 digs.
On Sunday afternoon the Pittsburgh Panthers (10-6, 2-0) handed Syracuse its first Big East loss on the road, falling 3-0. MacTavish led the way with 10 kills, while Morton and sophomore outside hitter Noemie Lefebvre contributed with nine each.
Pitt and Syracuse had an epic first set, with the Panthers edging the Orange by a score of 28-26. The Panthers took care of business in the final two sets, however, winning 25-16 and 25-19.
The Orange continues its Big East schedule on Friday, Oct. 2, when it takes on Rutgers at 7 p.m. in the Manley Field House.
Women’s soccer
The Syracuse women’s soccer team stunned Providence Thursday in double overtime, but the Orange could not overcome Connecticut on the road Sunday.
The Orange (4-5-2) finally hosted its first home game of the season Thursday night against Providence after being on the road for the first nine games of the season. The team surrendered a goal to the Friars in the 68th minute, but quickly recovered to force overtime. The team’s leading-scorer Tina Romagnuolo scored the game-winning goal in the 100th minute to secure the squad’s first Big East victory of the season.
Syracuse has not defeated Connecticut since the program’s inception in 1996. The Orange’s losing streak against the Huskies stretched to 15 games Sunday when it was shutout 5-0 in Storrs, Conn. Syracuse was outshot 18-8 in the squad’s second conference loss.
The squad hopes to climb back above .500 with home games against Cincinnati Friday and Louisville Sunday.
Men’s soccer
The offensive woes of the Syracuse men’s soccer team continued on the road this past weekend, as the Orange was blanked by Providence, 1-0, Friday and by Connecticut, 2-0, Sunday.
Against Providence, redshirt freshman goalie Ryan Jones finished with seven saves, but the Orange (1-8, 0-4) couldn’t overcome a late first-half score by Friars midfielder Matt Marcin. Marcin’s goal, his first of the season, came in the 42nd minute off a cross from Nick Cianci to give the Friars the 1-0 advantage that was never surrendered.
Providence (4-3-0, 1-2-0) outshot the Orange, 8-1, in the first half with senior Hansen Woodruff taking SU’s only shot attempt of the half in the 33rd minute.
Against UConn (4-2-2, 3-1), SU allowed two early goals and never recovered. Both goals came in the first 15 minutes of play.
SU limited the Huskies to just five shots in the second half, but the two early goals were all the Connecticut defense needed as it held the Orange to five shots in the match. Four of SU’s offensive chances came in the second half, but each time the Orange failed to find the back of the net. It was the second consecutive shutout for the Huskies.
