STAFF: Orange men’s soccer loses 2nd straight
Men’s soccer
The Syracuse men’s soccer team (2-10-0, 1-6-0 Big East) yielded three goals to three different players Saturday, falling, 4-0, to No. 12 Louisville at Cardinal Park in Louisville, Ky. It was the sixth time the Orange has been shut out and the most goals it has allowed in a game on the season.
The Cardinals (8-1-2, 5-1-1) got on the board in the 16th minute on a Syracuse own goal and carried its 1-0 margin into the locker room at halftime.
Senior captain Hansen Woodruff led the Orange offense with three shots, including SU’s only shot-on-goal of the match early in the first half. Senior Tom Perevegyencev recorded SU’s only other shot of the game in the 66th minute.
Orange redshirt freshman goalkeeper Ryan Jones registered four saves in the contest. A week after being named Big East Rookie of the Week following his performance in SU’s 3-0 shutout of Rutgers, Jones has since yielded 7 goals in SU’s last two games.
Syracuse now returns for a three-game homestand, starting on Tuesday, when it hosts Central New York foe Hartwick at SU Soccer Stadium.
Women’s soccer
The Syracuse women’s soccer team (4-8-3, 1-5-1 Big East) continued to slide with a pair of 1-0 loses against West Virginia and Pittsburgh.
Despite a strong effort by the defense Friday at West Virginia, Syracuse was unable to recover after allowing a goal in the 51st minute of the game. The defense stopped 15-of-16 corner kicks from the Mountaineers and goalkeeper Eliza Bennett-Hattan recorded five saves, including the 300th in her career. The Orange had only one corner kick opportunity in the game.
On Sunday, Syracuse could not produce enough opportunities against Pittsburgh. The Panthers notched the game-winning goal in the 35th minute on a direct kick that was headed past Bennett-Hattan. The Orange was outshot, 16-4, in the loss.
Syracuse finishes its road schedule with games Thursday and Saturday against No. 10 Rutgers and Seton Hall.
Volleyball
The Syracuse volleyball team continued its strong start to the Big East schedule with another 2-0 weekend.
On Saturday, the Orange (16-5, 5-1 Big East) knocked off St. John’s, 3-1, in New York. Senior Annabelle Pellerin led the team with 15 kills and helped bring the team back after the Red Storm took the first set.
Senior middle blocker Sarah Morton made history when the Orange traveled to Storrs, Conn. Morton became Syracuse’s all-time leader in career total blocks, as the team shut down Connecticut for a 3-1 win. Freshman setter Laura Homann dished out 45 assists and senior outside hitter Kacie MacTavish contributed 19 digs in the four-set victory.
The Orange will be back in action Friday when South Florida comes to Syracuse. Syracuse also has a match on Sunday in Manley Field House against Georgetown.
Ice hockey
The Syracuse ice hockey team (0-3-1) earned its first point of the season Friday in a 3-3 tie at Boston College, before losing on the road to No. 3 New Hampshire, 2-1, in heartbreaking fashion Saturday.
After falling behind, 3-0, to the Eagles (1-1-2), the underdog Orange squad stormed back to earn the tie. Junior Stefanie Marty scored SU’s first goal in the final minute of the second period. The Orange then carried its momentum into the third period, as freshman Holly Carrie-Mattimo found the back of the net to bring SU within one goal. With less than five minutes remaining, freshman Isabel Menard scored the equalizer for the Orange.
Skating against her former school Saturday, Marty’s second period score gave SU a 1-0 lead over the Wildcats (4-0-0). However, the Orange faltered, allowing New Hampshire to tie the score midway through the third period and score the game-winning goal with 7.2 seconds remaining in regulation. Senior goalie Lucy Schoedel, also a transfer from UNH, made 33 saves in the losing effort.
Syracuse returns to New England next weekend for two more nonconference clashes against Hockey East opponents, when it challenges Connecticut and Providence on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
