Staff: With victory, SU women’s basketball off the best start in 31 years
Improving its unbeaten record to 8-0 with a 70-54 win at Ohio Sunday, the Syracuse women’s basketball team is off to its best start in 31 years. The only other time the women were 8-0 was in 1974-75 and 1978-79.
With the win, both the Orange men and women are 8-0 for the first time in school history.
Junior guard Erica Morrow led a balanced women’s offensive attack with a team-high 14 points, as three other Syracuse players hit double-digits in scoring. Freshman center Kayla Alexander continued to play solid for the Orange, adding 13 points, while senior forwards Juanita Ward and Nicole Michael pitched in 11 and 10, respectively.
Initially, Ohio kept the game close, tying the game on three separate occasions. But with the game knotted at 10 with 12:24 remaining in the half, Alexander hit a jumper and the Orange never trailed again. Syracuse held a comfortable 40-26 lead heading into halftime.
Syracuse’s offense hit a rhythmic stride in the second half, taking advantage of an 11-0 run which led to a commanding 51-26 lead coming out of the locker room. It wasn’t until the 16:14 mark that Ohio was able to stop the scoring drought, but that didn’t stop the Orange from maintaining control, reaching its highest lead of the game, 55-28, with 15:25 left.
Next up for the Orange is Dartmouth at the Carrier Dome Sunday, Dec. 13 at 6 p.m.
