Ice hockey stays in second place in conference with two-game split at Niagara

Ice Hockey

The Syracuse ice hockey team split a pair of games at Niagara over the weekend to retain sole possession of second place in the College Hockey America, with four conference games remaining on its schedule.

Friday night the Purple Eagles (10-12-4, 5-5-2 CHA) scored first, but Orange freshman forward Holly Carrie-Mattimoe responded with her eighth goal of the season on a power play with just two seconds left in the first period. A Niagara tally midway through the second, however, proved to be the game-winner as SU lost, 2-1.

The Orange (16-13-1, 7-5-0 CHA) fell behind early again Saturday afternoon, in a game broadcast regionally by Time Warner Cable Sports.

Trailing 1-0, junior forward Julie Rising registered her team-best 14th goal of the year to knot things up 8:05 into the second period. Then, Isabel Menard – second in the nation among freshmen in points – gave Syracuse its first lead of the series with 2:28 to play in the second.

SU would hold on for the 2-1 victory, despite being outshot 32-18. Senior goaltender Lucy Schoedel made 31 saves for the Orange, which remains two points ahead of the Purple Eagles in the standings.

Syracuse hosts Robert Morris – last in the conference (7-20-1, 0-9-1 CHA) – for its final two home games next weekend.
