STAFF : IHOC snaps 7-game road losing streak in win over Wayne State

The Syracuse ice hockey team snapped a seven-game road winless streak Saturday with a 3-1 victory over Wayne State. The Orange also tied the Warriors 1-1 on Friday.

Syracuse (11-13-4, 5-4-1 College Hockey America) and Wayne State (8-15-1, 1-8-1) both failed to score in the first two periods Friday despite plenty of opportunities. WSU outshot the Orange 10-1 in the first period, during which SU had four power-play opportunities but could not capitalize. SU had four power plays of its own in the second period but couldn’t convert any of its 19 shots.

Wayne State finally scored about two minutes into the third period, but Syracuse tied the score less than three minutes later on a goal by sophomore Isabel Menard.

SU outshot WSU 5-0 in overtime but couldn’t break the tie.

Syracuse finally broke out of its slump in the second period Saturday. Senior Ashley Cockell scored on a power play a little more than seven minutes into the period. Senior Stefanie Marty added to the lead with a goal less than a minute later.

Wayne State cut the lead to one with less than four minutes left in the game, but Menard recorded an empty-net goal with less than a minute remaining to secure the win.

The Orange is off this coming weekend before taking on No. 4 Mercyhurst at home Feb. 11 and 12.
