STAFF : Syracuse ice hockey suffers shutout road loss to Colgate

The Syracuse women’s ice hockey team fell to Colgate in a blowout loss, 5-0 on the road in Hamilton on Monday night. The Raiders broke open the game with four goals in the second period.

Syracuse (8-12-1, 0-1-1 College Hockey America) played the Raiders (7-10-1, 2-4-1 Eastern College Athletic Conference) to a scoreless first period, outshooting Colgate 12-8. But after the first frame, the game got out of hand for the Orange. Four different skaters scored for Colgate in the second period.

With Jenesica Drinkwater between the pipes for SU, Colgate’s Melissa Kueber got the scoring started when she cut across the crease and buried the puck in the back of the net less then three minutes into the period. Then just 68 seconds later, Shannon Doyle netted a goal to put the Raiders ahead by two.

The onslaught continued later in the period. With 48 seconds left, Jenna Klynstra powered the puck past Kallie Billadeau, who replaced Drinkwater midway through the second period. And then with 14 seconds left, Taylor Volpe deposited the fourth and final goal of the period to end a miserable middle period for the Orange.

Colgate added a goal midway through the third period when Brittany Philips scored her ninth goal of the season.

Drinkwater ended the game with nine saves, and her replacement Billadeau ended with 15 saves.

Syracuse takes on conference rival Mercyhurst (14-4) on Friday at 7 p.m. at Tennity Ice Pavilion.
