Staff: Big 1st half sends Syracuse to 17-12 win over Boston College

Syracuse (5-2, 1-0 Big East) used an 11-goal first half to cruise past Boston College (4-6, 1-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) 17-12 on Wednesday afternoon in Newton, Mass. The No. 6 Orange extended its win streak to three games.

Syracuse exploded out of the gate, scoring four goals in the first five minutes behind a goal and assist from Michelle Tumolo. After Moira Barry put the Eagles on the scoreboard, Alyssa Murray fed Kelly Cross and Kailah Kempney for two scores 41 seconds apart.

Down 6-1 not even 10 minutes into the game, BC responded with two goals to cut the deficit to three. But Syracuse embarked on a 5-2 run – courtesy of Kempney’s third goal of the game – in the last 15 minutes of the half to take an 11-5 halftime lead.

After Boston College struck first out of the break, the Orange answered with a 4-1 run spanning less than nine minutes to pull away. Freshman Kayla Treanor scored twice in the stretch, and Murray scored her second goal while notching her fifth point of the game.

The Eagles scored three times unanswered to draw within five goals with 12:34 left, but it was too late. Both sides went scoreless until the final four minutes, when BC’s Covie Stanwick recorded her third goal and sixth of seven points on the afternoon.

Ten different players found the back of the net for SU.

In her third straight start, SU goalie Kelsey Richardson made two saves in the cage to earn the win. Alyssa Costantino replaced her after the first half and also recorded two stops.

Syracuse held the advantage in most statistical categories. SU won the turnover battle 16-10 and scooped up 14 ground balls to BC’s nine.

The Orange plays at Northwestern on Saturday at 1 p.m. in a rematch of last year’s national championship game, an 8-6 Wildcats victory.
