For the first time since the pandemic began, people felt a real sense of normalcy this year — they could finally gather together to celebrate, protest and support.
Syracuse University and the city joined together to stand up against antisemitism, the overturn of Roe v. Wade and the war in Ukraine. Students celebrated SU’s first national title for men’s soccer, a new university record for kills in volleyball, the first Block Party since 2019 and an undefeated start to the football season.

Former Syracuse women’s basketball player Felisha Legette-Jack accepts the position of women’s basketball head coach in March. Legette-Jack became the first woman in Syracuse University’s history to have her jersey retired and hung in the Dome in November 2021.

Syracuse football wins its fifth-straight game to start the season after a 59-0 win over Wagner on October 1. For the first time since 1987, Syracuse started the season 6-0, eventually earning it a spot in the Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl against Minnesota.

Polina Shemanova breaks Syracuse volleyball’s all-time kills record on Oct. 9. Shemanova finished with 1,845 kills throughout her career and earned both the AVCA East All-Region Team honors and the AVCA honorable mention All-America honors.

The 2022 Remembrance Scholars lay stones and roses at the annual Rose Laying Ceremony on October 21 to end Remembrance Week. The scholars decided to place the stones, a Jewish bereavement practice, as a way of not only standing up against terrorism but also antisemitism.
