Syracuse University’s Student Association is hosting its annual Multicultural Week this week, in collaboration with several student organizations.

SA President German Nolivos said the association and its partners are working to uplift multicultural registered student organizations, despite national efforts to limit diversity, equity, accessibility and inclusion. Ahead of the week’s events, assembly members are working with SU’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion and RSOs to celebrate a diverse array of cultures on campus.

“We don’t plan to change any of the efforts that we have done for years now, and feel it would be disrespectful to the amazing student leaders that we have worked with in the past for the benefit of the university, campus and student government,” Nolivos said. “Since early last semester, (ODI) knew that multicultural week is one of the most important initiatives and activities that it does.”

This year, the association wanted to make partnerships between RSOs and SA its top priority for the week. Nolivos noted that every major activity is sponsored by or co-organized with a campus group.

This year’s Multicultural Week festivities will feature:

Monday: Fan Painting
SA and XCUSE, a dance group, will host a fan painting event in Hall of Languages 115. Painting will run from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., and teach traditional brush painting, along with modern techniques.

Tuesday: African Bachelor/Bachelorette Celebration
In collaboration with SA, SU’s African Student Union and the Sigma Beta Rho multicultural fraternity will host a cultural celebration Tuesday evening. The festivities will include self-care kits and umbrella-making, along with traditional African pre-wedding rituals, starting at 7 p.m. at the Barner-McDuffie House.

Wednesday: Latinas in Media
SA and SU’s chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists will host a panel featuring five Latin American women who are active in the media industry. The guests will discuss their experiences as Latinas working in journalism, public relations and photography industries. The Wednesday panel discussion will be at 6:30 p.m. in the Joyce Hergenhan Auditorium.

Thursday: Travel through MGC
SU’s Multicultural Greek Council, along with seven other student organizations, will host a cultural fair, offering food, games and exhibitions presented by student groups. The event begins at 7 p.m. in Grant Auditorium. Students can purchase tickets through SU’s Student Box Office.

Friday: Caribfest
On Friday, SU’s Caribbean Students Association will host its annual Caribfest in Schine Student Center’s The Underground. The casino-themed event will feature performances from SU student performing groups and offer music and food from 7–10 p.m.

Hendricks Chapel will also host spiritual programming throughout the week, which can be found through SU’s events calendar.

Also this week, candidates for SA’s 69th assembly executive positions will participate in the annual SA Executive Debate on Thursday evening. Citrus TV will host the debate, which will begin at 7:30 p.m. at SU’s National Veterans Resource Center.
