Josh Gattis is “expected” to join Syracuse football’s coaching staff, CBS Sports and 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz reported Wednesday. Gattis previously served as Maryland’s offensive coordinator and wide receiver coach for the last two seasons. However, after the Terrapins’ offense ranked 120th among 134 teams in Pro Football Focus’ offensive grade, the two sides parted ways.

It’s unclear what Gattis’ role at SU will be. Offensive coordinator Jeff Nixon is remaining with the program despite NFL interest and Myles White was reportedly hired to replace Ross Douglas, who departed for the same role at Oregon, as the Orange’s wide receivers coach.

Before his stint at UMD, Gattis was the offensive coordinator and wide receiver coach at Miami (2022) and Michigan (2019-21). In his final year at Michigan, Gattis was named the Broyles Award winner, which is awarded to the nation’s top assistant coach. Before then, he was the co-offensive coordinator and wide receiver coach at Alabama (2018).

Prior to his coaching career, Gattis was a safety at Wake Forest and was later selected in the fifth round of the 2007 NFL Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars. His coaching career began in 2010 as a graduate assistant at North Carolina, which also led to stops at Western Michigan (2011), Vanderbilt (2012-13) and Penn State (2014-17) in higher roles.
