DPS investigating reported bias incident

Syracuse University’s Department of Public Safety is investigating an alleged bias incident that occurred at the intersection of University and Waverly Avenues around 9:30 p.m. on March 26.

The four students who reported the incident alleged that a person in a dark truck yelled a racial slur before driving toward Marshall Street, according to a Thursday email from DPS. The department said it received the report Wednesday and has since opened an investigation.

“We are committed to fostering a safe and respectful environment for all members of our community,” Craig Stone, DPS chief and associate vice president, said in the email. “I appreciate the reporting party’s decision to come to us with this information so our team can work towards a resolution. If anyone has additional information, I urge them to contact DPS directly.”

DPS is reviewing surveillance footage in the surrounding area and interviewing witnesses.
