Syracuse University’s Department of Public Safety is investigating two reported bias incidents that occurred last week, according to a Monday morning email. In both reported incidents, people in vehicles shouted racist slurs at pedestrians in the university’s vicinity.

DPS said it has identified all responsible parties using witness reports and security footage.

Last Monday, three males reportedly shouted racist expletives from a white Ford F250 truck at the intersection of East Adams Street and University Avenue. The second incident occurred Thursday, when a person not affiliated with the university reportedly yelled a racial slur from a black Chevrolet Suburban near Shaw Hall. Both incidents were reported to DPS on Friday.

DPS has verbally warned the four people to stay away from university property and issued trespass warrants.

“I am grateful the reporting parties provided such clear descriptions of the vehicles and additional information that allowed us to identify the vehicle registrants,” Craig Stone, DPS chief and associate vice president, said. “Thank you to our investigations team for their quick work in getting in contact with the individuals. Anyone with any more information is urged to contact DPS.”

The report follows a similar one from March 26, when three men allegedly yelled racial slurs at four SU students at the intersection of Waverly and University Avenues. DPS said it is continuing to investigate all three incidents.
