Syracuse linebacker Marlowe Wax has signed with the Los Angeles Chargers as an undrafted free agent, SU football reported on Saturday. Wax accumulated 338 tackles in his five-year career with the Orange from 2020-24. He is the 10th former SU player to be drafted or signed by an NFL team this offseason.

A star running back and linebacker for Mount St. Joseph High School (Maryland), Wax entered Syracuse as a three-star prospect, per 247Sports. Though he ditched playing offense, Wax became a key part of SU’s linebacker core in 2020, playing in all 11 of its games, including one start.

He then emerged as a starter in 2021, the first step to becoming one of the best linebackers in the Atlantic Coast Conference. After a 60-tackle campaign, Wax developed into a key cog in the Orange’s defense in 2022, as his team-high 91 tackles helped lead them to their first bowl game since 2018. His performance culminated in an All-ACC Honorable Mention selection.

Wax had the best year of his collegiate career in 2023, registering a career-best 110 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss and four sacks while forcing four fumbles. This led to Second Team All-ACC honors.

Though he had one more year of eligibility remaining, Wax’s future was uncertain following former head coach Dino Babers’ firing. However, after Syracuse hired Fran Brown, Wax, Justin Barron and Oronde Gadsden II announced they’d all return to the program.

Heading into his final collegiate campaign, Wax was named to the All-ACC Preseason Team. The linebacker earned ACC Linebacker of the Week honors after his Week 1 performance versus Ohio but also suffered an injury that forced him to miss the next five games. Still, Wax finished the season with 44 tackles and was an All-ACC Honorable Mention pick.

Wax will now look to make the Chargers’ 53-man roster and join a linebacker room with Khalil Mack and Bud Dupree.
