Syracuse wide receiver Trebor Peña will enter the transfer portal, 247Sports reported Tuesday morning. Peña had a breakout 2024 season, registering a career-high 84 receptions and 941 receiving yards. He was set to play at SU for a sixth collegiate season in 2025, but he’ll now likely use his final year of eligibility elsewhere.
Head coach Fran Brown tabbed Peña as a team captain when announcing he’d return to the Orange for his final collegiate season before the Holiday Bowl against Washington State. Though he wore a non-contact jersey during SU’s spring game on Saturday, Peña played alongside its starting offense.
Following Jackson Meeks and Oronde Gadsden II’s moves to the NFL, Peña was expected to be new starting quarterback Rickie Collins’ No. 1 target. With Peña’s departure, Syracuse is losing its three leading receivers from last year.
Still, the Orange have significant wide receiver depth. Darrell Gill Jr., who had breakout performances against UConn and Washington State, will probably become Syracuse’s No. 1 receiver with Justus Ross-Simmons and Emanuel Ross behind him.
Meanwhile, SU has Jaylan Hornsby and South Carolina transfer Tyshawn Russell, who have shown flashes throughout the spring game and practices. Freshmen Darius Johnson and Demetres Samuel Jr. have also impressed, giving SU a plethora of wide receiver options.
