No. 9 Syracuse wins 5th straight Goes Trophy, claims Stagg Trophy

No. 9 Syracuse men’s rowing won its fifth straight Goes Trophy and its sixth consecutive Stagg Trophy Saturday, defeating No. 16 Cornell and No. 20 Navy in the meet that dates back to 1955.
The Goes Trophy goes to the winner of the varsity 8 race between all three schools, while the Stagg Trophy is awarded to the team that collects the most points throughout the first three races of the morning.
The Orange’s varsity 8 prevailed on the 2,000-meter course with a time of 6:07.0, beating the Big Red by 6.5 seconds and the Midshipmen by 12.2 seconds.
Syracuse gathered the Stagg Trophy for accumulating the most points overall in the second varsity 8, third varsity 8 and fourth varsity 8 races. All four SU teams won its races, as the Orange completed the sweep in the morning over Cornell and Navy.
The 2V8 boat had a time of 6:11.2, beating Cornell by 5.7 seconds and Navy by 12.9 seconds. The 3V8 boat put up a time of 6:23.4 and the 4V8 boat finished at 6:26.4, both besting second-place Cornell by about ten seconds. Navy trailed behind those races finishing in last with times of 6:48.1 and 6:46.4, respectively.
Next week, the Orange head to Lake Morey, Vermont, to race in the Packard and Conlan Cups against No. 3 Dartmouth, No. 12 Boston University and No. 13 Georgetown.
