Syracuse women’s lacrosse has dropped five spots to No. 11 in the Week 9 Inside Lacrosse Poll, which was released Monday. The move marks the first time SU is outside the top 10 since Week 1 of 2019, when it was also at No. 11.
The dip comes after SU was upset by then-No. 13 Yale on Wednesday despite destroying California on Saturday. The Orange entered their matchup with the Bulldogs on a season-high four-game winning streak. But they couldn’t extend it to five. Despite an even first quarter, Yale pulled away via an 18-minute SU scoreless drought to hand it a 13-10 loss.
Only four Bulldogs players scored goals. But SU couldn’t stop them. While leading scorer Jenna Collignon was face-guarded often by Syracuse, the strategy didn’t work. She totaled three goals while Fallon Vaughn poured in five.
Their efforts were aided by success on the draw control. The Orange couldn’t find a rhythm all game, swapping between Joely Caramelli, Meghan Rode and Molly Guzik in the circle. But the trio finished just 7-for-26, leading to the defeat.
On Saturday against Cal, SU bounced back. After Syracuse entered halftime up just 9-5, it blitzed the Golden Bears in the second half. The Orange outscored Cal 9-1 in the half and kept Cal off the board for 25 minutes to finish off an 18-6 blowout.
Syracuse’s offense showcased its depth and versatility in the contest, with nine different players finding the back of the net. Three recorded hat tricks, but it was freshman sensation Caroline Trinkaus who led the charge, pouring in four goals to continue her standout debut season. Meanwhile, star attacker Emma Ward climbed to second in the program’s all-time assists leaderboard by dishing out five against the Golden Bears.
SU now has two more regular-season games. On April 17, the Orange will battle now-No. 2 Boston College, which moved out of the No. 1 spot for the first time all season after falling to now-No. 1 North Carolina on Saturday.
