Syracuse offensive lineman Mark Petry announced on social media Wednesday that he tore his right ACL, marking the end of his college career. The Hochheim am Main, Germany native was set to enter his sixth season with the Orange.

Petry said in his statement that his ACL is believed to have been torn for possibly a year now, and a recent MRI revealed the tear. His injury forced him to decide whether to play out the 2025 season while risking a professional future or get surgery and prepare for next year’s pro day. He chose to undergo surgery.

Petry, who turns 27 in October, began his career in the United States in 2019 at Ellsworth Community College (Iowa). After appearing in eight games, he transferred to Syracuse for the 2020 season, where he primarily played a reserve role. He was sidelined during the 2021 season due to injury, but after returning limited in 2022, Petry became a mainstay of SU’s offensive line for the 2023 and 2024 seasons.

In Dino Babers’ final season at the helm, Petry started 11 games at right tackle, allowing just three sacks. The following year, under Fran Brown’s new staff, Petry slid inside to right guard and started every game. He posted a 62.9 overall offensive grade per Pro Football Focus and achieved a season-high 86.3 pass-blocking mark in SU’s Holiday Bowl win over Washington State.

Petry took most reps throughout the spring as Syracuse’s starting center but is now out for the 2025 season. The Orange lost Savion Washington to the Los Angeles Chargers, J’Onre Reed to USC and Jakob Bradford graduated, making Da’Metrius Weatherspoon the only viable returner to the starting offensive line. This offseason, Syracuse made shifts with redshirt sophomore Trevion Mack set to start at left tackle and Weatherspoon sliding to the right side.

The Orange also lost David Wohlabaugh Jr. and Enrique Cruz Jr. to the transfer portal but added multiple highly touted transfers to the roster including Austin Collins, Kam Pringle, Zach Rice and TJ Ferguson.
