Syracuse men’s rowing rose from No. 11 to No. 10 in the Week 5 Intercollegiate Rowing Coaches Association/Intercollegiate Rowing Association Varsity 8+ poll, which was released Wednesday. Although the Orange didn’t race this weekend, now-No. 11 Northeastern dropped a spot after a poor showing against No. 4 Dartmouth Sunday.
The Huskies finished second in all four races against the Big Green. Their first varsity 8 (5:41.00) trailed by nearly seven seconds to Dartmouth’s 5:34.07. NU’s worst performance of the afternoon came in the 3V8 contest, when it fell behind by almost nine seconds.
Syracuse’s performance against Dartmouth on April 26 was stronger than Northeastern’s. Although the Orange lost each of their four head-to-head battles, they were consistently within five seconds of the Big Green.
Still, Syracuse has regressed from its initial No. 7 ranking to start its campaign and needs a strong performance in its next regatta on May 18 — the Eastern Sprints in Worcester, Massachusetts. In last year’s competition, the Orange competed in eight races, where their third varsity 8 (5:47.140) gave them their only win in the 3V8 Heavyweight Petite Final ahead of No. 8 Penn, No. 11 Northeastern, No. 12 Wisconsin, No. 14 Cornell and No. 20 Navy.
