Former Texas guard Laila Phelia has transferred to Syracuse, On3 reported Thursday. Phelia is SU’s fourth addition from the transfer portal this offseason, and its first at the guard position.

In April, SU started its offseason by adding Auburn center Oyindamola Akinbolawa, USC transfer forward Dominique Darius and former Miami forward Aurora Almon.

Phelia provides a major boost to SU’s back court. The 6-foot senior averaged over 16 points twice in her career, including a career-best 16.8 points per game in 2023-24 with Michigan.

In her lone season at Texas, Phelia played in just eight games off the bench before requiring eye surgery. She averaged 6.1 points before redshirting the season.

The Ohio-native played her first three seasons at Michigan. As a freshman, she averaged 8.8 points in 22.9 minutes per game to earn a spot on the Big Ten All-Freshman Team. The next two seasons, she started 57 of her 59 appearances while becoming a top-two scorer for the Wolverines.

Now, Phelia will spend her senior season with the Orange. She’ll be given an immediate chance to contribute in SU’s backcourt, with leading scorer Georgia Woolley and assist-leader Dominique Camp running out of eligibility.
