Syracuse women’s rowing fell from No. 11 to No. 12 in the Pocock Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Poll, which was released Tuesday. Although SU didn’t race this weekend, its drop comes after an impressive showing from now-No. 11 Harvard at the Women’s Sprints Sunday.
The Crimson competed in 14 races, placing first four times and second on five occasions. One of their most impressive wins that catapulted them from No. 14 to No. 11 was in the varsity 4 Grand Final. Their 7:49.218 time beat No. 8 Brown (7:54.403) by five seconds and barely fell to No. 7 Rutgers (7:49.149). Harvard’s second varsity 8 (6:59.774) even defeated the Scarlet Knights (7:01.418) by nearly a second and a half.
Harvard’s varsity lightweight 8 (6:54.918), though, did something Syracuse couldn’t at the Redwood Shores in April — beat No. 1 Stanford, which finished almost six seconds later. When the Orange went toe-to-toe with the Cardinal, they lost all four races, in which three of their boats finished at least 12 seconds behind.
Syracuse will continue to focus on the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships, which take place next weekend in Clemson, South Carolina. Twelve members will be participating in the regatta, eight of which represent the conference in Tuesday’s poll. SU sits as the third-best team in the ACC, only trailing No. 1 Stanford and No. 9 California.
