SU men’s rowing ends strong at IRA Regatta, places 6th in Ten Eyck Trophy

Syracuse men’s rowing ended the year strong at the IRA Regatta, placing in all four finals and placing sixth in the Ten Eyck Trophy.
SU came into the week ranked 11th in the IRCA/IRA Varsity 8+ Poll. On Friday, its varsity 8 finished third in the six-team heat with a time of 5:39.560, 4.51 seconds short of No. 3 Harvard and 3.5 seconds off No. 6 Yale. The finish helped it qualify for the semifinal on Saturday. Juniors Mack Carr and Benjamin Campbell-Reide switched boats, with Luke Dunleavy and senior Jack Gorman moving from second to first boat. Senior Joseph Biondolillo coxswained.
Its second varsity 8 had a strong Friday finishing second in its heat with a time of 5:41.7, about 3.5 seconds behind Harvard. The Orange’s 2V8 also qualified for Saturday’s semifinal, coxswained by freshman Lucas Tan. SU’s third varsity 8 finished second in its heat (5:47.01), 2.58 seconds behind Washington to qualify for the semifinals.
Syracuse’s varsity 4 boat finished sixth in the 39-team time trial with a time of 6:09.692, 10.254 off of first-place Washington. Its boat featured freshmen Jack Caldwell, Jack Walker, Michael Gore and senior Scott Zimmerman. The coxswain was senior Katherine Kelly.
SU’s varsity 4 followed up a strong Friday showing by placing second in its semifinal heat (6:20.52), three seconds behind Washington. In the final, it finished in fifth (6:23.52), 11.86 seconds behind the first-place Huskies.
In Saturday’s semifinal, Syracuse’s varsity 8 finished second in its heat with a time of 5:27.04. The Orange were only 2.9 seconds behind Harvard, clinching a spot in the grand final. Their second varsity 8 finished its semifinal heat in second (5:36.39), only 2.51 seconds short of Cal. The finish qualified the Orange’s second varsity boat for the grand final. SU’s third varsity 8 also made the grand final, finishing second in its semifinal heat with a time of 5:37.54, 2.38 seconds behind Harvard.
In Sunday’s finals, its third varsity 8 boat finished in sixth with a time of 5:42.83. The Orange were 13.77 seconds behind the winner, Harvard. SU also finished behind Washington, Cal, Yale and Princeton. Its second varsity 8 got fifth in its final, finishing in 5:30.67. It was 5.25 seconds behind first place, falling to Washington, Harvard, Cal and Brown. In the final event, Syracuse’s varsity 8 placed sixth in its final with a time of 5:41.62. The Orange followed Washington, Harvard, Dartmouth, Princeton and Brown, 11.84 seconds behind the winners.
The Orange had their best team finish at the IRA Regatta in program history, finishing sixth in Ten Eyck Points, besting a seventh-place finish last year. It’s the first time in school history that all four boats made the final under the current IRA format.
