Syracuse freshman edge rusher KingJoseph Edwards has reportedly entered the transfer portal, he told On3 Monday. Edwards tallied three sacks as a redshirt freshman and was the top defensive recruit in SU’s 2024 class.

To enter the summer-time transfer portal window between July 7 and August 5, Edwards was deemed a “designated student-athlete” by the school. This is a grandfathered athlete who is exempt from the new roster limits through the landmark House vs. NCAA class-action settlement.

A four-star prospect out of Mill Creek High School in Hoschton, Georgia, Edwards received an offer from the Orange immediately after the hiring of Fran Brown. He then chose Syracuse over Colorado and big-time offers from SEC and Big Ten powerhouses like Alabama, Florida, Ohio State and Michigan, among many others.

Edwards rarely saw the field in his freshman campaign, tallying 43 total snaps in four games plus the Holiday Bowl to preserve his redshirt. He accumulated five total tackles, and all three sacks came against Holy Cross.

His transfer comes weeks before the start of fall training camp. The Orange have now lost their top three defensive recruits in the 2024 class with Edwards on the way out, Michael Nwokocha transferring to Texas State and Marcellus Barnes Jr. leaving for SMU. SU’s remaining edge rushers include Denis Jaquez Jr., Cal transfer David Reese and Chase Simmons.
