Syracuse University’s Chancellor Kent Syverud announced he is leaving the university after the 2025-26 academic year, he announced Tuesday.
Over the next year, the Board of Trustees will be selecting a successor. Syverud was chosen as chancellor in 2013, having served for the last 12 years.
Board of Trustees Chairman Jeff Scruggs wrote in a campus-wide email that SU has “benefited” from Syverud’s time. He cited partnership with Micron, the JMA Wireless Dome and developments in veteran affairs.
“Our campus, which is hardly recognizable from just a decade ago, has been physically transformed in ways that will serve generations to come,” Scruggs wrote.
The Board will share information on the next chancellor’s selection process in the next few weeks. It will work with “input from faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends of the University.”
Sveryud will continue his work as chancellor for the rest of the school year. His contract was set to end in June 2026.
“There is still more to do, and I’m energized for this final year,” Sveryud wrote in a campus-wide email. “We will continue advancing, building, and achieving, together as One University.”
