Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs will no longer offer a civic and community engagement major for students graduating in 2029. It will offer a new minor, according to a Monday release.

Students already enrolled in the major as part of a dual degree will still receive full support until program completion, the release states. A new CCE office will also open this fall to provide support and a new CCE minor.

Students starting fall 2025 and after will declare a CCE minor with the new office.

The office’s programming more closely aligns with the school’s academic strategic plan for a broader range of students, Dean Van Slyke said in the release.

“As a major, CCE had been limited to 30 students per cohort year. Creating a minor and the office will open up our unique offerings to a much larger pool of students across the University,” Amy Schmidt, who will lead the new CCE office, said in the release.

The CCE minor will provide increased engagement opportunities, scholarships and fellowships for students interested in civic engagement, the release said.
