Syracuse University’s Institutional Research Team joined the Office of Institutional Effectiveness over the summer, the university announced Monday.

The newly consolidated office remains under the Office of Academic Affairs. The merged OIE will provide students and faculty with “timely insights” and decision-making support to assist with data analysis and strategic planning, the release states.

The “reorganization” allows the institutional research team, led by Amy Gardiner, to focus more deeply on research related to student retention, graduation and academic performance, according to the release.

The team will also gain access to OIE tools, methodologies and collaborations. Gardiner now reports to OIE director, Laura Harrington.

“This merger, which brings together two teams with complementary missions and expertise, is a strategic step toward creating a unified and agile continuous improvement and analytics-driven unit,” Jerry Edmonds, chief of staff for academic affairs, said in the release.

The office’s new structure will include a single point of access for data and analysis, boasting a quicker response time and a simpler data request process, improved support tools, clarity on official data definitions and sources, the release states.

The Office of Institutional Data and Reporting, led by Seth Ovadia, will remain a distinct unit, according to the release. The OID, which will now report to Edmonds, will continue to be responsible for official reporting, data integrity and compliance. It will also maintain oversight of external data requests.

The merger will provide staff and senior leadership with coordinated and forward-looking data services and consultations, Edmonds said.

“It allows us to deliver more impactful insights and better support Syracuse’s strategic goals—especially in the areas of student success, academic excellence and institutional effectiveness,” Edmonds said in the release.
