Steve Angeli is out for the remainder of the 2025 season after tearing his Achilles tendon in Syracuse’s win over Clemson Saturday, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported Sunday.

The injury prematurely ends Angeli’s promising campaign. The Notre Dame transfer led the country in passing through the first three weeks of the season with 1,072 yards, and against Clemson, he posted an 18-for-31 passing day for 244 yards and two touchdowns.

The junior quarterback exited Saturday’s game late in the third quarter after scrambling to his right and collapsing to the ground. Angeli’s left leg buckled awkwardly, leaving him lying in visible pain as SU trainers ran out to assist him.

He previously injured his left knee in the first quarter versus the Tigers, prompting him to wear a knee brace in the second half. But his afternoon was done after he went down for a second time.

Syracuse backup quarterback Rickie Collins replaced Angeli and threw a crucial touchdown to Justus Ross-Simmons, helping guide the Orange to an upset road victory in Death Valley.

SU head coach Fran Brown didn’t comment on Angeli’s status postgame besides inferring he’d miss significant time. But an MRI on Sunday revealed Angeli suffered a torn Achilles.

Collins will be Syracuse’s starting quarterback going forward.

Angeli, who spent his last three years enrolled at ND, will likely qualify for a medical redshirt year, essentially wiping his 2025 season clean from his eligibility record. It would give him two more years of Division I eligibility.

His prolonged absence delivers a major blow to the Orange, whose triumphant victory over the Tigers on the road came at the cost of losing their No. 1 signal-caller. Collins, who finished his relief appearance Saturday 3-for-8 with 34 yards and a score, entered 2025 having attempted seven career passes at LSU from 2023-24.

Collins will make his first-ever collegiate start for Syracuse this Saturday against Duke in the JMA Wireless Dome.

Brown still made sure Angeli knows that SU’s belief in him is unwavering. Following Saturday’s game, the second-year head coach consoled Angeli outside the Orange’s locker room.

“I told him I love him,” Brown said. “I made sure he knew that and that we’ll be with him, and we’re going to stick with him all the way through that. That’s what family does.”
