Syracuse cross country raced in the Gans Creek Classic in Columbia, Missouri for the first time in program history Friday. The women’s race featured 16 ranked teams, while the men’s field included 18 of the USTFCCCA’s 30 ranked teams.

The women’s team finished 15th out of the 31 teams in its field in the 6K course. Sophomore Selma Anderson led the way for SU with a 38th place finish, finishing with a personal-best time of 20:08.7. She was followed by redshirt senior Emma Eastman, who finished roughly 10 seconds behind Anderson in 48th.

Redshirt senior Madeline Heintz was the final SU runner to place within the top 100, earning a 92nd place finish. Jayden Harberts and Maisie Burns finished the race in 122nd and 143rd, respectively. The Orange finished ahead of No. 6 Alabama and No. 24 Lipscomb.

The men’s squad — currently ranked No. 12 in the nation — fared much better on the 8K course, as it finished sixth out of the 32 teams in its field. Senior Assaf Harari paced SU with a 17th-place finish. He narrowly beat out redshirt senior Sam Lawler, who placed a couple seconds behind Harari in 22nd place.

Florida State transfer Matthew Neill finished 39th in his second race for Syracuse, while Kansas transfer Peter Walsdorf finished 72nd with a personal best 23:34.5 time on the course. Redshirt freshman Ben Gabelman rounded out the Orange with an 80th place finish.

Syracuse will compete again next week in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania in the Paul Short Run. The event, hosted by Lehigh, marks the first time the Orange run in consecutive weeks this season.
