Syracuse field hockey dropped two spots in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Week 3 Poll Tuesday, falling to No. 6. The Orange lost back-to-back games last weekend, ending their undefeated start to the season.
Last weekend, SU suffered a 2-1 overtime loss to then-No. 20 Wake Forest Friday before losing to No. 3 Virginia Sunday, conceding a penalty stroke goal in the final minute of its 2-1 defeat. The Cavaliers remained at No. 3 in the poll, while the Demon Deacons climbed seven spots to No. 13.
The Orange earned 161 points in the poll, just three points ahead of No. 7 Duke and slightly behind No. 5 Liberty by five points. SU didn’t receive any first-place votes. Northwestern remained at No. 1 with 217 points, followed by No. 2 North Carolina (212), Virginia (198), No. 4 Harvard (178) and Liberty.
Syracuse was one of six teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference ranked in the poll, joined by North Carolina, Virginia, Duke, Wake Forest and No. 16 Louisville.
The Orange opened the year ranked No. 11 after their season ended last year with a 1-0 defeat to then-No. 10 Harvard in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
