Syracuse University is partnering with Anthropic to give students, faculty and staff members access to Claude for Education, an artificial intelligence search engine specially made for academic environments, SU announced Monday.

SU is one of the first universities in the United States to grant campus-wide access to Claude, according to the release. The effort is part of SU’s “long-standing leadership” in digital innovation.

Anthropic, an AI company founded in 2021 by former OpenAI employees, focuses on delivering “reliable, interpretable, and steerable” AI, according to its website. The company says this partnership is a “model” for higher education.

Jeff Rubin, senior vice president and chief digital officer, said expanding Claude access will make SU “the most digitally connected campus in America.”

“By equipping every student, faculty member and staff member with Claude, we’re not only fueling innovation, but also preparing our community to navigate, critique and co-create with AI in real-world contexts,” Rubin said in the release.

SU will have access to the newest Claude model with designed usage limits for academic work, collaborative learning through shareable projects for group work, the ability to process 500+ page documents, new academic integrity tools with “learning mode” and a “privacy-first” design.

Claude’s “learning mode” allows conversations that guide rather than directly answering, according to its website. The AI program uses Socratic questioning, emphasizes core concepts and provides templates for research papers, study guides and outlines.

“This partnership reflects our shared commitment to preparing students with the AI fluency skills they’ll need while maintaining academic integrity and critical thinking at the core of education,” said Johanna Bowman, an Anthropic education partnerships lead.

The Information Technology Services team will support Anthropic in rolling out the software and ensuring it’s accessible for all learning needs, according to the release.

Students, faculty and staff can request access to Claude starting on Sep. 24 through getclaude.syr.edu. SU will also offer training and workshops to help users “maximize” the platform.
