Syracuse field hockey was ranked No. 4 by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Poll Tuesday, moving up one spot from its previous No. 5 placement. SU’s 6-0 record is the program’s best start since 2017, when it started 7-0.
Last weekend, the Orange earned their third win against a top-20 opponent this season, beating then-No. 11 Princeton in overtime Friday before coming back to win 5-2 over Lafayette after trailing early Sunday. The Tigers improved two spots in the poll, moving up to No. 9.
The Orange earned 186 points in the poll, 26 points ahead of No. 5 Harvard and slightly behind No. 3 Virginia by 11 points. SU didn’t receive any first-place votes. Northwestern remained at No. 1 with 216 points, followed by No. 2 North Carolina (213), Virginia (197), Syracuse and Harvard (160).
Syracuse was one of six teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference to make the poll, joined by North Carolina, Virginia, No. 7 Duke, No. 13 Boston College and No. 20 Wake Forest.
The Orange opened the year ranked No. 11 after their season ended last year with a 1-0 defeat to then-No. 10 Harvard in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
