Syracuse field hockey climed six spots in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Preseason Poll Tuesday, from No. 11 to No. 5. The ranking is the highest the Orange have seen since head coach Lynn Farquhar took charge of the program in February 2023.
This weekend, the Orange earned two wins against top-20 opponents, shutting out then-No. 16 Rutgers 2-0 before narrowly defeating then-No. 13 Ohio State in a 2-1 double overtime win. Ohio State improved one spot to No. 12, while Rutgers dropped two spots to No. 18.
The Orange earned 161 points in the poll, which was eight points ahead of No. 6 Duke and 10 points behind No. 4 Boston College. SU didn’t receive any first-place votes. Northwestern remained at No. 1 with 218 points, followed by No. 2 North Carolina (211), No. 3 Virginia (195), No. 4 BC and No. 5 Syracuse.
SU was one of five teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference to make the poll, joined by North Carolina, Virginia, Boston College and Duke.
Syracuse started the year ranked No. 11. Its season ended last year with a 1-0 defeat to then-No. 10 Harvard in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
