J. Cole Smith, the dean of Syracuse University’s College of Engineering and Computer Science, will leave the university on Nov. 1, Vice Chancellor, Provost and Chief Academic Officer Lois Agnew announced in a Tuesday email.

Smith was offered a new position as provost of Clemson University, where he previously served as associate provost for academic initiatives and chair of the department of Industrial Engineering, Agnew wrote.

He will begin the position on Jan. 1.

“We are deeply grateful for Cole’s dedicated service, visionary leadership and commitment to excellence,” Agnew wrote. “While we are sad to see him go, we know he will do great things in this new role as he returns to Clemson.”

The university appointed Smith as dean of ECS in October 2019.

Agnew wrote that she will be “consulting with ECS community members” on picking the school’s interim dean, intending to announce a new dean by the end of this week.
