Syracuse field hockey was ranked No. 9 in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Poll Tuesday, falling four spots from its previous No. 5 placement.
SU went 1-1 on its West Coast trip, defeating Stanford on Friday but falling to now-No. 19 California on Sunday.
Backed by Hattie Madden and Danique Schuurman’s goals, along with solid defense, the Orange withstood a late Cardinal comeback effort on Friday night for their fourth straight win. It was also SU’s 12th victory over Stanford in 13 matchups.
On Sunday, however, SU’s offense was stagnant in its 1-0 loss to Cal. The Orange outshot the Golden Bears 17-6 but didn’t net any goals in the upset defeat.
Syracuse earned 139 points in the poll, 22 ahead of No. 10 Maryland (117) but four behind No. 8 Duke (143). Northwestern remained at No. 1 for the seventh straight week with 214 points, followed by No. 2 North Carolina (213), No. 3 Virginia (197) and No. 4 Harvard (190).
SU was one of six Atlantic Coast Conference teams in the poll, along with North Carolina, Virginia, No. 5 Wake Forest, Duke and Cal.
The No. 9 ranking is Syracuse’s lowest since the Preseason Poll, when it was No. 11 following an NCAA Tournament loss to then-No. 10 Harvard last year.
