Syracuse University’s Department of Public Safety has taken a suspect in custody following a Wednesday assault, according to a campus-wide email.

At around 12:46 p.m., an SU-affiliate returned to their vehicle in the University Avenue Garage and found the suspect inside, the email states. The suspect was taken into custody “within minutes,” and is not affiliated with Syracuse University.

The SU-affiliate sustained a laceration to their hand during the “struggle,” according to the email. The injuries are non-life-threatening.

The Syracuse Police Department has seen 43 car thefts this week, double the normal weekly amount, CNY Central reported.

Due to a campus-wide uptick in vehicle larcenies and break-ins, DPS recommends everyone on campus to lock vehicle doors, remove keys and not leave valuables in plain sight.

The investigation is ongoing, according to the email, with no “continuing threat” on campus.
