Syracuse field hockey dropped one spot to No. 10 in the Week 9 National Field Hockey Coaches Association Poll Tuesday, stooping to its lowest ranking since being placed 11th in the Preseason Poll and falling out of the single-digit rankings for the first time in the regular season.
Syracuse’s dip stemmed from a 3-2 upset loss to Louisville in its last regular-season match. Despite mounting a comeback in the fourth period via a late Pati Strunk goal to cut the deficit to one, the Cardinals withstood the offensive push.
SU earned 110 points in the poll, 17 behind No. 9 Iowa. It’s the lowest number of points the Orange have totaled since the Preseason Poll, where their 99 points ranked 11th following an NCAA Tournament defeat to then-No. 10 Harvard last year.
No. 1 North Carolina (218) pulled further ahead of No. 2 Northwestern (209), receiving nine first-place votes to the latter’s two. In their wake is No. 3 Harvard (199), No. 4 Virginia (188), No. 5 Princeton (175), No. 6 Wake Forest (164), No. 7 Liberty (149) and No. 8 Duke (148).
The four Atlantic Coast Conference squads ranked ahead of SU make it one of five ACC teams in the top 10 this week. No. 6 seed Syracuse begins ACC Tournament play against No. 3 seed Wake Forest Tuesday night at 6:00 p.m.
