Syracuse’s disastrous 2025 season will finally come to a close Saturday. The Orange have been lost the past two months, dropping seven-straight games and playing some of the most uncompetitive football you’ll ever see. SU reached peak embarrassment with its 70-7 defeat to No. 9 Notre Dame on national television last week.
Fran Brown’s second season has been a far cry from his 10-win debut, where the New Jersey native injected new life into the program. Now, he’s faced with rebuilding Syracuse’s roster and proving this year was an aberration. SU will attempt to end the season on a high note when it takes on fellow Atlantic Coast Conference bottom feeder Boston College at the JMA Wireless Dome Saturday.
The Eagles are the only winless ACC team in conference play. They’d be the first team since Duke in 2021 not to win an ACC game. However, SU’s quarterback situation remains in flux, and it hasn’t shown it can do anything well, meaning BC could have a shot.
Here’s how our beat writers feel Syracuse (3-8, 1-6 ACC) will fare against Boston College (1-10, 0-7 ACC) in the season finale:

The nail in the coffin

This could go down as one of the worst football games of all time. A meeting of two ACC bottom feeders for the bottom slot in the conference is just what the NCAA imagined when moving games to The CW. Luckily for the Orange, they won’t be down 35-0 after 15 minutes. But Syracuse will still add to its 2025 embarrassment with the final nail in the coffin, a defeat to Boston College.
While the Eagles haven’t won since Aug. 30, they’ve notably played some good teams close as of late and are trending in the right direction. Instead of losing by 63 to Notre Dame like SU, BC fell by only 15. A recent two-point loss in the final seconds to then-No. 16 Georgia Tech differed substantially from Syracuse’s 25-point defeat to the then-No. 7 Yellow Jackets.
While this should be Luke Carney’s game, the horrific mismanagement of his redshirt ended his season in South Bend. Instead, we’ll likely see a mixture of Rickie Collins and Joe Filardi, which will fail to put up more than 20 points one last time. On the flip side, the Eagles surprisingly have a strong passing game, ranking fourth in the ACC in passing yards per game.
This is one of those games that only sickos watch. The Orange will likely bring the contest down to the wire, but no one in their right mind can rebound from last week’s historic loss and come out the next week with a win. Not in the 1890s. And not in 2025.

Pitiful

There’s not much left to say anymore. The Orange are one of the worst teams in college football. They’ve been outscored by 198 points in the seven full games since Steve Angeli’s Achilles tear. They just suffered their worst loss as a program since Grover Cleveland was in his second term as President of the United States. The season is over. It’s time to move on.
You have to feel bad for Syracuse’s roster at a certain point. They’re just kids. And they’re being put into awful positions, the prime example being Brown’s choice to start a walk-on quarterback, Filardi, on the road against a national title contender in Notre Dame. It was uncompetitive, hopeless football and made the Orange seem like a less-serious team.
Their plummet into despair will continue Saturday versus Bill O’Brien’s Boston College. Syracuse will lose in the same fashion it has this entire historic losing skid: by showing no pulse on offense and getting gashed for too many big plays on defense. Especially with running back Yasin Willis out again, Filardi (and whoever else gets QB reps) won’t have much help.
This may go down as SU’s worst loss of the year — even worse than last week’s brutal affair. Somehow, a one-win Eagles squad has looked unequivocally better than the Orange down the stretch. Losing by multiple scores to this BC team will punctuate how far Syracuse has fallen from its 3-1 start, which feels like years ago.

Avert your eyes
Syracuse 9, Boston College 24
This game should have a trigger warning for college football enjoyers. At least those who like high-level football. I’m sure the Sickos Committee will keep a watchful eye on this one. Not many others.
Like every Syracuse game without Steve Angeli, it’ll fall short. The concept of starting Filardi — and mixing in true freshman Rich Belin — again is insane to me. No offense to the quarterback, but he’s proven nothing during his limited action. Brown is only opening himself up for more scrutiny with his decision making. Just play Collins and get the season over with. I’m not saying SU would win with him, but he’d give it the best chance. But Brown refuses to do that, and the Orange will be embarrassed yet again.
Boston College was competitive against Georgia Tech, something Syracuse hasn’t been since September. Quarterback Dylan Lonergan had a career day, throwing for 362 yards and two touchdowns. With Lonergan under center, the Eagles will put up enough points on Syracuse’s porous defense, while its offense will continue to be uncompetitive.
Yes, BC statistically has the worst defense in the ACC, allowing 449.5 yards and 34.6 points per game. That won’t matter. The Orange’s quarterback conundrum will prevent them from having any consistency on offense. I think this will be a close game at halftime, but with Syracuse unable to move the ball, its defense will eventually gas out, and Boston College will pull away. The Eagles will put a final stamp on what’s been the most embarrassing Syracuse season in recent memory.
