Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs Jamie Winders will address Syracuse University academics at the Student Government Association’s Monday meeting, SGA announced in a Saturday Instagram post.
Winders will represent the Office of Academic Affairs, which is led by Vice Chancellor and Provost Lois Agnew. The office oversees setting academic policies and standards, as well as hiring faculty.
Students are welcome to share questions, comments or concerns “regarding academics at Syracuse University,” according to the post.
The discussion comes after ongoing portfolio reviews, conducted by the office, resulted in the pausing of admissions into 20 majors and programs in the College of Arts and Sciences without faculty input.
Programs that have been “paused” will not accept new or transfer students, but students currently enrolled in the majors will not be affected.
The pauses have sparked concern among affected departments, prompting some to hold informational meetings to address uncertainty about their programs’ futures, including the Department of African American Studies and the Department of Religion.
On Oct. 22, SU’s University Senate overwhelmingly passed a resolution affirming the “primary control of the faculty over the curriculum” and cementing their role in the portfolio review process.
At the meeting, Agnew said SU’s 462 program offerings exceed other institutions, adding that 34% of programs account for 80% of total university enrollment, while the remaining 66% account for just 20%.
SGA’s Monday meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Maxwell Auditorium. The association’s assembly group on Freedom, Accountability, Inclusion and Rights is also hosting a panel discussion in the Maxwell Auditorium on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
