Asst. Digital Editor Fall '24 to Fall '25 Hannah Mesa | Illustration Editor

When The Daily Orange posted on Instagram that it was hiring in-house staffers for the fall 2024 semester, my mom sent me the post and pushed me to apply. I was anxious and reserved, a second-semester freshman still unsure of what my Syracuse University experience would look like.

I owe her everything for making sure I applied that day.

When I started as an Assistant Digital Editor, I had no idea what to expect. My imposter syndrome was through the roof my first day of transition week. But over time, my coworkers became my friends, and The D.O. house became a safe space for me on campus. I’ve created work I’m genuinely proud of and I’ve learned so much from this place and the people in it.

I’ve grown immensely as a journalist, person and teammate. This job pushed me to step out of my comfort zone and I am proud of the growth it gave me. It’s true, it’s the people who make the place.

Kendall Luther and Rose Boehm: The best bosses. You guys are the most understanding and kind people to work under and it has been such a pleasure. I love chatting with both of you guys during prodo and I look up to both of you so much. I will miss you.

James Hoagland and Griffin Uribe Brown: You guys are the GOATs. I have loved doing dig for you both this semester! Thank you for your patience and understanding with me throughout the semester and making me a better assistant. Griffin, you’re going to do amazing as the new DME and I can’t wait to see what you come up with.

Delia Rangel: Our 3rd semester together, and you got to be my boss this time! You are so talented and smart (with the best aux and daylists) and I can’t believe we won’t be seeing each other every week in the newsroom anymore after 3 semesters. I’m so glad I stayed this semester because working with you as my head ed has been such a joy. Please prepare to see me in Florence next semester, it is happening (and I better see you in London…)

Shivika Gupta: I’m so grateful we finally became friends last semester after taking so many classes together. It’ll feel weird and lonely not having you beside me in political science classes when I’m abroad. I always love getting to read your work on nights when you have a story. You are such an amazing writer and I know that your future is immensely bright because of all your hard work and talent. So thankful that The D.O. gave me you as a friend.

Chloe Rinka: The first day I met you (transition week and I had to train you for dig) I was scared of you – you are so effortlessly cool and chic. But now I love having you as a friend and so glad that you moved to assistant so we can actually work on the same days now! You’re genuinely hilarious and some of my favorite memories from this semester have involved us laughing during prodo. I will miss you.

Duncan Green: You were such an incredible boss to have last semester and I’m happy to see that you’re having a blast in Chile. You always brought a great attitude to the newsroom and you were very missed this semester, especially when Hamilton came to town (it’s still not pronounced “Br-ahh-t-wurst,” by the way.)

Julia Boehning: Thank you so much for giving me a chance and hiring me to be on last year’s fall staff. Your decision to hire me for dig has changed my life here at SU for the better and I am so grateful. It’s been so nice to see you this semester when you come in for enterprise! Michael Jackson Willy Wonka forever.

Henry Daley: One of my favorite people I’ve met from this place. This is my formal apology for rage-baiting you and teasing you over the semesters, but I miss you being in news (but you’ve been so good in sports.) Thank you for putting up with me.

Kate Jackson: I’m so happy you came back this semester! I definitely missed you in news last semester when you were abroad. You’re such a talented reporter and I can’t believe you’re graduating next semester.

Brenne Sheehan: You are going to be an incredible head ed next semester and I can’t wait to hear all about it. Addison Rae concert was genuinely a movie and you are such a funny, talented person.

Sydney DePietto: Sydney, you’re actually hilarious. #zolofttwins. I’m so glad you joined staff this semester and that I got to hang with you during prodo. One day, let’s go join the Amish and make our dreams come true.

Ally Goelz: You were so extremely easy to train because you’re so smart and amazing. I wish we got to work more days together because you’re such a cool, funny person, but I’ll see you in Londontown!

Arabella Klonowski: So awesome that you’re coming back as an asst next semester! I’m so proud of you for going to live out your (our) Trinity College dreams in Dublin. I had a blast working with you last semester and I can’t wait to see you when I’m back from London.

Cassie Roshu: I really love dig now because I had you as my first DME. You made me better at dig and you were such an awesome boss to have. It was such a crazy and cool coincidence having you sit behind me on the bus to NYC in October – you’re awesome.

Stephanie Wright: I miss you, Chiefanie! I was definitely intimidated by you at first, but it was just because of how much I truly look up to you and admire you as a writer and person. It’s so nice to see how supportive you still are of The D.O. post-grad! So honored to have had you as my editor-in-chief my first year on staff.

Fall News ‘24: My first The D.O. family. At first I was shy and reserved to myself, which definitely gave you guys the incorrect impression of who I really am. We shared so many laughs and Halloween night prodo in our Wonka costumes still remains my favorite D.O. night.

Spring News ‘25: God we had fun. I loved talking musicals with you guys and laughing over God knows what. Oh, and talking about AJ and Big Justice.

Fall News ‘25: All female newsroom! I will miss every DWTS Tuesdays, chaotic print night and random conversations that we have shared over the semester. Please don’t be a stranger.

Mom, Dad and Patrick: Thank you for consistently supporting me and reading all of my articles for The D.O. Dad, thank you for posting my articles for all of your 500+ LinkedIn connections (you think you’re famous because of this) to see and read. You too Mom with your amazing Instagram stories. And Patrick, thanks for just reading my work, I miss you. My biggest cheerleaders and favorite people in the world.
