Following the death of Syracuse University professor Fei Wang, the university announced a tentative January memorial service to honor his legacy.

On Dec. 8, Wang, a 45-year-old SU associate teaching professor in the School of Architecture, died in a traffic accident in London, according to a Thursday release. Wang’s work left a lasting mark on his students and friends at SU, with many of Wang’s colleagues and friends describing him as a dedicated advocate and mentor to his students, the release states.

Wang began teaching at SU in 2014, and was the director of China programs and M.S. program coordinator in the School of Architecture at the time of his death. A writer, curator, designer and entrepreneur, Wang’s work was exhibited globally and earned him various awards, according to the release.

In 2022, Wang earned the Chancellor’s Citation for Outstanding Contributions to the Student Experience and University Initiatives. The honor recognized his work helping 150 architecture students continue their education remotely when they were unable to leave China amid the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the release.

“He bridged American and Chinese architectural education, connecting so many people across the field,” Na Wei, a friend of Wang, said in an Instagram post.

In an Instagram post members of Drawing Architecture Studio — a Beijing architecture firm — reflected on how he helped them adjust after moving to the United States.

“He helped us far more than we ever helped him. It is heartbreaking to realize that we will never have the opportunity to repay his kindness,” the members said.

More details on his memorial service will be released soon.
