Bo van Kempen has been named the Mideast Region Player of the Year, the National Field Hockey Coaches Association announced Thursday. Van Kempen is the first SU player to collect the award since Laura Hahnefeldt in 2012.
The Syracuse defender started all 20 games for the Orange in 2025 and made her mark through her two-way statistical dominance. Anchoring both the back line and the attacking penalty-corner unit, she posted a team-high four defensive saves. At the same time, her 23 goals ranked third in Division I and second in all-time SU history. Van Kempen’s performance also earned her All-Atlantic Coast Conference and NFHCA Mideast All-Region Team honors for the second straight year.
The Zevenaar, Netherlands, native notched seven assists and 53 points on the season — the third-highest total in Syracuse history. Plus, her 2.65 points per game average placed fifth nationally.
Van Kempen joins the ranks of Beth Yeager (Princeton, Mid-Atlantic), Bronte May-Brough (Harvard, Northeast), Maddie Zimmer (Northwestern, West) and ACC counterpart Ryleigh Heck (North Carolina, South) in receiving the Region Player of the Year award.
All five players are now eligible for the National Player of the Year award, which will be announced on December 18, following the D-I All-Americans on December 16.
