Syracuse long snapper Ethan Stangle has entered the transfer portal, he announced on social media Friday. Stangle spent four seasons with the Orange and has one year of eligibility remaining.
Stangle is the first Syracuse special teams player to enter the portal, following defensive players Derek McDonald and Chase Simmons. The long snapper was a key part of SU’s special teams unit this season, which turned around its fortunes. After struggling mightily under James Vollono in 2024, Fran Brown brought in Ricky Brumfield, an experienced coach at the Power Four level.
Under Brumfield, SU’s special teams saw major improvement. Stangle earned a 67 grade for special teams from Pro Football Focus, Syracuse’s eighth-best mark. Meanwhile, kicker Tripp Woody went 12-for-14 on field goals without missing an extra point; and punter Jack Stonehouse — who declared for the 2026 NFL Draft Wednesday — earned First Team All-Atlantic Coast Conference. Still, Brumfield was fired on Dec. 1 along with several other SU coaches, as Brown looks to reconfigure his coaching staff.
With Stangle in the portal, the Orange will be in the market for a new long snapper. Fran Brown Jr. spent time in the position this season, but he only played in eight games.
