Former Syracuse wide receivers coach Myles White will join South Florida’s coaching staff in the same role, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported Friday. White spent less than a year with the Orange and was let go by head coach Fran Brown in early November, following five-straight losses.
“For us to get the best out of our players for the last few games of the year, for us to possibly try to go and be able to have a fourth game and do all the things that we need to do, I felt as though some stuff needed to happen to our staff,” Brown said of his decision on Nov. 3.
Before his stint at SU, White spent time with SMU, Stephen F. Austin, Miami (Ohio) and the Green Bay Packers. On Feb. 26, Syracuse hired him to replace Ross Douglas, who left Syracuse for the same position at Oregon.
White was also SU’s passing game coordinator. Through four weeks, everything was going swimmingly. Steve Angeli was spreading the ball around to players like Johntay Cook, Justus Ross-Simmons and Darrell Gill Jr. Angeli led the nation in passing yards (1,317) but tore his Achilles in SU’s win over Clemson on Sept. 20.
Syracuse totaled 1,290 passing yards across its final eight games, while multiple quarterbacks failed to live up to Angeli’s standard. White was let go after Syracuse’s 27-10 loss to North Carolina, where walk-on quarterback Joe Filardi had just 38 passing yards, and the Orange failed to score an offensive touchdown.
“It’s kind of the nature of the business,” former Syracuse wide receiver Emanuel Ross told The Daily Orange of White’s firing on Nov. 4. “(White) is a great guy. I enjoyed working with him. Now he’s not here, but it’s just kind of how it goes. It definitely caught us by surprise.”
The 35-year-old will be part of Brian Hartline’s new staff at USF after Hartline was hired on Dec. 3. Hartline — the former offensive coordinator at Ohio State — is taking over for Auburn head coach Alex Golesh.
