Former Syracuse running back Malachi James transferred to Eastern Michigan, he announced on social media Monday. James played in just eight games in two years at SU and only recorded two carries. The running back was mostly used as a kick returner during his time with the Orange.
James is Syracuse’s second running back to find a new home this offseason, joining starter Yasin Willis, who committed to Kansas last week. Will Nixon also declared for the NFL Draft after he tried to gain an extra year of eligibility from the NCAA. In the portal, Syracuse added running backs Ju’Juan Johnson (LSU) and Ahmad Miller (Jackson State). Johnson and Miller will compete for the top running back spot next season.
According to 247Sports, James was a three-star recruit coming out of Burlington City High School. He was ranked as the 17th-best player in New Jersey in the 2024 recruiting class.
James’ most notable accomplishment with Syracuse came in track and field. He competed for SU in the 4×100 relay, alongside football teammates Darrell Gill Jr. and Malachi Coleman. Gill entered the transfer portal on Dec. 30, while Coleman is still with the program.
James will join an Eastern Michigan team that won four games in 2025 and hasn’t made a bowl game since.
