Former South Carolina tight end Michael Smith is reportedly signing with Syracuse, 247Sports reported Sunday. Smith is a former four-star recruit and tallied eight starts with 126 receiving yards across two seasons.
A native of Savannah, Georgia, Smith is a 6-foot-6, 248-pound freak athlete. He was ranked as the No. 5 tight end and the No. 97 player in the nation for the 2024 class. Smith received offers from top Big Ten schools Ohio State and Michigan and SEC programs Alabama, Tennessee, LSU and a few others before choosing the Gamecocks.
With South Carolina, Smith carved out a role as a blocking tight end mostly. He appeared in all 12 games as a freshman, tallying 106 receiving yards and a touchdown. In his sophomore campaign, he missed spring practice with an injury. He then suffered a shoulder injury and left the squad after four games, preserving his redshirt.
Smith could be in line for a key role with the Orange. Quarterback Steve Angeli targeted Dan Villari heavily in his four games in 2025, feeding him for 240 receiving yards and 20 receptions. Villari’s production, and the rest of SU’s receiving corps, diminished heavily following Angeli’s season-ending injury. Villari is out of eligibility and is now headed for the NFL.
Angeli follows Smith on Instagram, though the tight end is yet to post anything confirming his move to SU. Syracuse is also expected to return David Clement, Elijah Washington-Baker, Daunte Bacheyie and Wyatt Bowman at the position.
