Syracuse track and field split up its squad this weekend, sending 18 distance runners to Boston University for the John Thomas Terrier classic and the rest of the team to the Cornell Invitational. SU only scored points at Cornell, where both the men’s and women’s squads finished fifth in their respective competitions.
Across both meets, there were only two first-place finishers, both coming in Ithaca in the 60-meter hurdles. On the men’s side, Isaiah Hayes took gold in the event, crossing the line in 7.98 seconds. On Jan. 24, the sophomore finished in 7.60 seconds, a time that still puts him in the top 10 in the country. It’s still the fastest time in the event among runners at ACC schools. In the same race, Tawakal Omar also finished fifth.
On the women’s side of the 60-meter hurdles, Taleea Buxton topped the podium, finishing in 8.29 seconds. The time is a personal best that puts her in the top 50 nationally for the event. Buxton joins her teammate, Tia Outlaw, who put herself on the same list after running an 8.31 when the squad went to Penn State on Jan. 17. Emily Clark also came in fifth in the same race.
In the women’s 400-meter, Nicea Jones finished second with a time of 55.99. She came through the first lap in first place, but lost at the line by roughly a tenth of a second. Shayla Ford picked up some points for the squad, finishing in fifth place.
At the John Thomas Terrier Classic in Boston, the Orange had five female runners entered in the 3,000-meter run. The men had 13 runners on the track, three in the mile and the rest in the 3,000-meter. SU did not have a runner place in the top 10.
Syracuse is back in action Saturday, when it travels to Utica for the Blue and Orange Invitational. The Orange have three more race weekends before the ACC Indoor Championships start Feb. 26.
