Officers seen on Syracuse University campus Monday were United States Marshals, not Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents or representatives from any other agency, a university spokesperson confirmed.
Several posts on the anonymous social media app YikYak claimed ICE was on campus Monday morning.
The marshals were on campus as part of an investigation into an auto theft that occurred last month, the spokesperson said.
The spokesperson clarified that no other law enforcement agencies were on campus.
In a Monday Instagram post, the Syracuse Immigrant and Refugee Defense Network still advised caution for those “at risk,” and said U.S. Marshals are “routinely used” for immigration enforcement.
